The eternity in hanging out

2–3 minutes

This will probably steal 2 minutes of your time.

There’s something that happens when two Regina Spektor fans meet in Nigeria. Compared to other musicians like Wizkid or Beyonce, Regina Spektor is pretty unknown. When these fans meet, it’s as if they might as well have grown together in the same womb. All differences, years of not knowing each other melt away. What remains is their shared passion and that’s enough for a momentary kinship. They might never see each other again. Who cares? They are two white tigers that have found each other.

I like Regina Spektor’s songs, by the way. She’s weird like me. She rocked my after-undergraduate days. These days, I’m more into Passenger’s music. He’s a great writer.

There’s something that happens when Christians meet. I’m not just talking about a Sunday meeting with everyone all dressed up and looking ‘perfect’. I mean bumping into each other at the bank or the supermarket, or meeting up for ludo, Netflix and chill or a Zoom chat.

As long as two people with the spirit of God living in them are communicating, something happens. They catch a glimpse of eternity in each other which is enough to restore hope and keep them going on this side of life.

To be honest, the differences between them don’t melt away as one would like. Rather, they are challenged to walk through the differences. Unfortunately, more often than not, most of us selectively abandon Christ’s love (depending on the situation) and find a way to walk round differences instead. (Dear World, apologies for that.)

Eternity is in each and every follower of Jesus Christ. If you ever want a glimpse, proof that such a hope exists, take a look at anyone who lives fully submitted to the gospel. It’s not hard to see. On the surface, the person might be rather drab, no sense of fashion or struggling to overcome one weakness or the other; but the light of a renewal process in that life is unmistakable.

Beyond being social beings on a physical level, there is a spiritual phase to every interaction we have with other humans on the planet. With Christ in you, you are someone else’s glorious hope.

…Christ in you, the hope of glory
Colossians 1:27
