While visiting an aunty, we somehow ended up talking about the life we would live if we ever decided we wanted to go to hell. Yes, this was an actual conversation.
Dearest reader, before you continue reading this post, premise needs to be set. This was a conversation between two people that believe in the existence of a heaven, the dwelling place of God, and a hell, the default destination of all humanity because of sin. We also believe that God is the only source of all that is truly good.
These two people have put their trust in Jesus Christ and believed in his word which says that through faith alone in him, they have been freed from the curse of sin and can look forward to an eternity with God in heaven.
Now, is that clear? Ok, you can keep reading.
Sin is sweet
Taking time to think about how I would live, I felt a smile creep up my face as my imagination flew to places my body desires; feelings, wants and impulses I have had to crucify for the sake of knowing Christ. Needless to say, if I decided to head towards an eternity without God, I would make sure I’m baddest b**** to arrive in hell.
Sin is sweet. Being naughty feels good. Who doesn’t want to live for their own desires? That’s why temptation is called temptation; it would have no power if sin was not sweet.

The crux of our conversation was this: If you want to be bad, be bad and do it well. There’s no point living half-and-half.
There’s no point being part of a church while outside church you live your life as ‘normal’ and the gospel of Jesus is pushed somewhere to the bottom of your priority list. After all, that’s church over there but this is the real world here. Things operate differently here.
There’s no point trying to curry favour with long vigils, reciting prayers and having baptisms. Just in case there is really God and heaven and hell. All the while your heart remains unchanged.
Why punish yourself twice over?
There’s no point having a self-made sense of morality when you haven’t submitted to God’s word. You might as well throw your morals into a furnace.
If you are really not interested in following Jesus on the mundanely narrow road, live your life totally following your desires. There’s no point bothering with religiosity if you are heading in the same default direction as someone who doesn’t care at all. Enjoy yourself. Eat, drink and be merry. Why punish yourself twice over?
Are you coming or not?
In reality, there is no half-and-half. When it comes to following Jesus, the only options are: Are you coming or not?
You could always choose to put on your trainers and run the race. Trust me – no, trust Jesus – the goal of eternity is worth it.
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
John 10:10
