James’ Guide to Life is a series on James’ advice for surviving life as a Christian: getting on with one another and avoiding being eaten by wild beasts in the jungle of life.
Finally, keep moving. No matter how tired you are, no matter how long the road, just keep going. All your battles with beasts and ugliness would mean nothing if you give up.
Patience and perseverance will keep you till the end in the jungle. What use is starting a journey if you have no intention of completing it?
When you follow a road, it’s for the destination
James originally wrote to Christians living in persecution because of their faith in Jesus. Along with the usual daily challenges of living out their faith and scuffles in church, these Christians were constantly walking on the edge of the grave.
His letter begins and ends with a charge to persevere through trials and pray through difficulties. He reminds them of their hope – eternity with Jesus – and pushes them not to get tired of looking good, speaking well and laying low. Just keep doing good!

When you follow a road, it’s for the destination. All the signs and maps pointed you that way. As long as you follow the directions and stick to the road, you will get to the place you are looking for.
As a Christian, your goal is Jesus. So you stick to the path no matter the cost because you have a destination in mind. Consistency is what matures those who take the narrow path.
Even when you cannot see…keep on
So, even when you cannot see and the vision of the hope that you had at the beginning seems blurred, keep on. Even when you begin to wonder if that tiny thing is really a path and everywhere around you looks bushy and the same, keep on.
When you feel stupid for being quiet instead of trying to prove your point, keep on. When you feel like a weak pushover because of your humility, keep on. When your friends and family laugh at you for living out your faith selflessly, just keep going. Don’t look back.
You, too, must be patient. Take courage, for the coming of the Lord is near.
