What is available now tends to feel too small and insignificant. It always seems to be not enough; you need more, just a little bit more, and then you will be close to being okay. Really, how often is ‘okay’ achieved?

There is a place where whatever is available is all that is needed. Even if all you have is nothing, that’s already more than you need to have. God works with nothingness to make all things new. He works with the little we have to feed a multitude.

Did I ever tell you to build a temple?

It is a basic principle of life. Nothing ever starts big. Everything comes from the minuscule and seemingly insignificant. It’s the same for God’s work within our hearts and within our communities. However, we tend to be deceived by our eyes and our feelings. Human beings are big and exaggerated creatures, always seeking the glamorous and instantly impressive.

In the Bible, King David considers building a grandiose temple fit for God, finding it outrageous that the presence of God should dwell in a tent, as it was in David’s time. Though noble David’s intentions, God responds to him, essentially saying: Did I ever tell you that I needed a temple?

The tiny space no longer matters…and joy overflows

We treat our hearts and lives the same way David viewed the tent. I need to be cleaner, better well-behaved before I can seek God and be useful to him. I wish I had more so that I can do something meaningful. Wait until we get this, then we can truly worship God.

Yet, anyone who has ever enjoyed fellowship knows that the small room feels like a mansion when a community of believers in Jesus Christ sing together in sincerity of heart. The tiny space no longer matters, the clothes you are wearing become inconsequential, you are no longer aware that you haven’t eaten since morning, and the joy overflows.

Come to God now. Do not wait until everything looks okay.

You want for nothing as the nothing you have is truly more than enough as God becomes your everything. Your hands are empty but your hearts erupt laughter from somewhere deep within you all.

What exactly is it that I have spent all these words trying to say? Just come to God. Come now. Do not wait until the room is completely spotless, you have redecorated, or you have relocated to a better place. Just come as you are with the little or nothing that is available. He likes you that way.

But Jesus said, “That isn’t necessary—you feed them.”
“But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish!” they answered.
“Bring them here,” he said.
Matthew 14:16-18 (NLT)
