friends skateboarding

There is a marked tectonic shift that happened when I transitioned from simply possessing faith to when I could truly call God my friend. I no longer saw him as that ‘big guy up there’. He became the one right next to me here. There is a sweetness to it that once tasted, no matter what may happens in life, it’s difficult to pull back.

However, most often than not, we reach this point through a difficult season in life. For people who have put their faith in Jesus, our trials and suffering somehow make us see God clearer and purer.

No, this friendship is not borne out of clinging on to Jesus as a coping mechanism to survive the bumps of life. The friendship doesn’t come through an icon we have around our neck or staring at a painting we have on our wall. It is not psyching our minds.

Friendship with Jesus has nothing to do with us and how we encourage ourselves. It all has to do with him. God comes to all his children, with little effort on our part, and proves himself to be our faithful friend.

When everything has fallen apart, friends and family are not meeting up to expectations, and the dark hours of the night seem to be getting longer, our Faithful Friend still remains. When we watch as things we thought could not be destroyed any further are broken down even more, our Faithful Friend remains there with us. It may be difficult to feel his touch sometimes but we know he is there.

Through all these God stands firm, proving himself faithful and constant. As he stands unyielding, you see him clearer. Beyond the abstract faith you once had, his features become more defined, his love appears more overpowering and you have nothing left to say but “What a friend I have in Jesus!”
