Personally, I have avoided writing about the trinity.

I run this blog for people who would like to know more about the gospel and what life looks like as Christian. The Holy Trinity is one of the most obvious topics that might puzzle the mind of someone observing the Christianity, but not knowing where to begin with answers, I have tactfully dodged that maze.

Well, until now. I seem to have reached an unavoidable gridlock with no alternative routes, like a Lagos expressway.

Consider the sun

Trying to figure out what to write, I find that rather than dwelling on the logistics of the relationship between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as one God – intricacies beyond human words – and differences in theology between denominations and individual ideologies, perhaps it is more worthwhile to focus my consideration on what the trinity reveals to me.

Consider the sun. We know that the sun produces a great amount of light and heat. We also know that it does this by some chemical reactions. We are not present at its core as eye witnesses to see exactly how the molecules interact in real time.  In fact, we would be burnt up in an instant if we dared to approach it. What is most important to us is that it provides free natural light during the day, makes us warm and helps our food grow.

We just can’t handle God

With the trinity, perhaps it is best to fix our eyes on the undeniable significance of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit in our lives. If not, we might get carried away with many words without ever understanding what they mean.

The first thing I learn looking at the trinity is that we just can’t handle God. I believe that ‘the Father’, ‘the Son’ and ‘the Holy Spirit’ are the simplest terms that humans can grasp, that is why Jesus revealed God to us this way. If we are struggling with these elementary terms, how much more the full splendour and awesomeness of God!

Imagine what happened when John got a glimpse of Jesus Christ in all his glory. Revelation 1:17 says, “When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead”. The full nature of God is beyond us. That is why God reveals himself to us, step-by-step as we walk with him daily.

God is a relationship guy

Secondly, God works in partnership in all he does. From creation to redemption, the cross and our salvation, it’s always a collaboration of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We also see God partnering with men and women in the Bible to fulfil his purpose here on earth.

God wants partnership with us to transform our communities. He also wants us to partner with one another which is why he established the church.

There is only one name

Lastly, there is only one name. Matthew 28:19 says, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.  The ‘name’ here meaning a will, purpose and authority that is greater than any other. There is only one will, one purpose and one authority that is above all.

As people who have put our trust in the gospel, we are called to live our lives in oneness and unity of purpose, in submission to this one name that is above every other name.

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
