What does ‘The Mark 8 Christian’ mean?

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.  What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”
Mark 8:36-37

The Mark 8 Christian is what we are all called to be – followers of Jesus Christ. However, that’s not what it looks like in reality. We either neglect completely the knowledge of Christ while those of us who bother to go to church are more like ‘dictators of Jesus’ or ‘drivers of Jesus’. In the 21st Century mind, Christianity is either fiction or a tool used to feel good about ourselves, or worse still, oppress others.

The word Christian means ‘little Christ’. We are to be little saviours wherever we are. Jesus lived a life of sacrificial love, doing good wherever he went, healing the pain of those in distress, shining light into darkness. That’s what we are called to do. Follow him, and keep doing his love.
